Tarique cautions against hidden dictatorship, urges democratic unity

Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s acting chairperson Tarique Rahman on Saturday cautioned that Bangladesh might face the rise of a covert authoritarian system if nationalist and democratic forces fail to build solidarity.

Speaking virtually as the chief guest at the biennial council of Cumilla South district BNP, held at the Town Hall field in Cumilla city, Tarique drew parallels with past political episodes. “If we remain divided, if democratic forces fail to stand together, then just as dictatorship emerged through the so-called 2008 election and the ‘1/11’ episode, a hidden form of fascism may again take hold,” he said.

The BNP leader urged all pro-democracy groups to unite to safeguard both the people and the country. He stressed that BNP’s immediate responsibility is to work collectively to rebuild the nation. “To restore Bangladesh according to the people’s aspirations, unity among all is indispensable,” he added.

Tarique reminded supporters that people are BNP’s true strength. He instructed party activists to directly engage with citizens, not just rely on large meetings. “Form teams of two or three, go door to door, listen to people’s concerns, and explain how BNP plans to reform education, improve communication networks, support farmers, empower women, and enhance healthcare,” he said.

BNP standing committee member Salahuddin Ahmed, also addressing the council, stated that the people of Bangladesh are ready for elections despite efforts by some quarters to derail the process. He alleged that vested groups are spreading misinformation online to tarnish the BNP’s image.
