CUPERTINO, CA – In a move that further untethers the smartphone from its user, Apple has unveiled the Apple Watch Series 3, a significant upgrade whose headline feature is built-in cellular connectivity.
The new watch allows users to make calls, send messages, stream music, and get directions directly from their wrist, even when their iPhone is not nearby. This promises a new level of freedom for athletes, commuters, and anyone who wants to stay connected while leaving their phone behind.
“It’s the ultimate device for a healthy life,” said Apple CEO Tim Cook during the product’s unveiling at the new Apple Park campus.
Despite the new cellular radio, Apple claims the Series 3 maintains the same physical size and all-day 18-hour battery life as its predecessor. A small red dot on the digital crown is the only external clue to its advanced capabilities.
The cellular model will work with a user’s existing phone number, thanks to a custom-designed chip and an electronic SIM (eSIM). Major carriers have already signed on to support the service, which will require a separate monthly data plan.
The Apple Watch Series 3 also features a faster dual-core processor and a new barometric altimeter to track elevation changes and flights of stairs climbed.
The new watch will be available in both GPS and GPS + Cellular models, ensuring Apple’s wearable remains at the forefront of the connected lifestyle. Pre-orders begin September 15th
