The highly anticipated Amar Ekushey Book Fair for 2026 has been officially postponed, according to a recent announcement from the Bangla Academy. The cultural institution confirmed that the decision was made in coordination with government authorities, citing the upcoming national election as the primary reason for the change.
Originally, the academy had planned an unusual scheduling shift for the 2026 event. Instead of its traditional February slot, the fair was set to run from December 17, 2025, through January 17, 2026. This initial rescheduling was a proactive measure to avoid a conflict with both the national election and the holy month of Ramadan, which were anticipated to converge in February 2026.
However, a further adjustment has now been deemed necessary. The Bangla Academy’s Director General stated that the institution acted upon a formal request from the national advisory council on law and order. This committee, focused on ensuring stability during the electoral period, recommended postponing the large-scale public gathering until after the election cycle concludes, largely due to heightened security considerations.
The council’s recommendation was formally presented to the Ministry of Cultural Affairs following a high-level meeting. With the chief adviser of the interim government having previously indicated that the national poll is scheduled for the first half of February 2026, the authorities are taking preemptive steps to manage major public events.
Organizers have assured all stakeholders that the book fair has not been canceled. The Bangla Academy has committed to announcing new dates for the event following further discussions with publishers and other key participants in the literary community. A new schedule is expected to be released once the electoral process is complete.
